Geocaching 101
by Ryan Simonsen

Ever have that thirst for adventure?  Have you ever dreamed
of finding hidden treasure?  Have you ever wanted to go for a
hike, but you didn't know where to go?  Have I got a family
activity for you......Geocaching.

Geocaching is a world wide treasure hunt played with a GPS
reciever.  This is a fun activity for the whole family and the
best part is that it is free.  There are over 500,000 caches in
over 33 countries and it grows bigger everyday.

In order to start your adventure, all you have to do is go to
the
Geocaching site.

You can search by your zip code or by coordinates on your
GPS receiver.  The site will give you all the geocaches that are
close to you.  Then the hunt begins.

You put the location of the cache into you
r GPS and follow the
arrow to the treasure.  All caches are hidden by fellow players.

Each player can hide a cache within 25 miles of their home.  It
is kinda neat to see what people think are great places to stop
in their corner of the world.

When you get to the location, you must find the cache.  They
can range in size from a film canister to a large ammo can.

Some times they are hidden in really tricky spots.  Each cache
has a log sheet.  You sign the log to say you were there.  In
the larger caches there will be treasures.  These can be any
small trinket.  Some times we find hot wheels cars, sometimes
beads, and sometimes money.  The key to this is if you take a
prize you leave a prize.  That way the cache is never empty
and the next finder will also discover a treasure.

This is something my family and I have been doing for 3 years
now.  We have found 475 caches and we still love the hunt.  A
little fresh air, a little walking, and sometimes a little treasure.
You just can't beat it.
