Oatmeal Soap is a great place to start when you are
first beginning. They are not very hard to make and
they are supposed to look natural and rustic so you
can make them as gifts and they will look like they
came from an expensive store. It is also a very cheap
way to get started and see what you think. There are
two different recipes so you can decide what you are
more comfortable with or you can try them both and
see which one you like best. One recipe is melted.
When making soap for friends and family Ivory soap
might be a better choice if you are not sure if they
have allergies or sensitive skin. If you are using Ivory
soap you may want to do the Ivory Soap Experiment
as a way to break the soap up. It is much easier than
shredding it and a lot more fun to watch.
Melted Method
1. Put a skillet on the stove and turn the stove on medium
heat.
2. Take a bar of unscented soap (or another scent you want
with the oatmeal scent) and melt it in the skillet. I had a
hard time doing this method without adding a tablespoon at
a time of water. Stir after each tablespoon and stop adding
when it starts to come together.
3. Take about 1/4 cup of oatmeal and pour it into the melted
soap. Stir lightly.
4. When the soap is completely melted, take it off the stove.
5. Let it cool a little, then pour it into a mold (or something
you want it in the shape of) and let it cool in there.
*Notes
Don't put big chunks of oatmeal in because when you use it,
it will scratch your skin. Crush the oats a little with a mortar
and pestle or use a blender. If you use a blender be sure the
just give it a few taps you do not want it to become a flour.
Cold Method
1. Crush 1 cup of oatmeal in a mortar and pestle or use a
blender. If you use a blender be sure the just give it a few
taps you do not want it to become a flour.
2. Take a bar of soap and grate it on a cheese grater.
3. In a bowl, mix together the oatmeal, grated soap, and
1/4 cup of water. You can add food coloring if you want but
I think this soap is better natural and rustic looking.
4. Pat the mixture together into a ball.
Some people like to keep it in the ball shape. You can also
make a "hand patty" by taking that ball and carefully
pressing down so the circle fits better in your hand and is a
nice shape for holding in the shower.
5. Place the soap on waxed paper to fully dry out.
Homemade soaps are so popular these days. You can
have fun as a family and give out great gifts. You can
make soaps and candles easily with our instructions
and keep them ready to create great gift baskets.
People love gift baskets and what could be more
special than one that your family made together.
Have fun and make memories!!!
