Glycerin Soaps are great when you want to have
soap in fancy shapes or you want to add toys or
other objects. Your kids might just beg to take a
bath when they have their own soap with a little toy
in the middle. You can also make decorator soaps to
give your bathroom counter some more excitement.
If you want to start small just to try it out you can
just buy a bar of soap at the store. If you find that
you want to make more you can head to a craft
store and buy larger amounts.
Working with glycerin soap is a lot like making
candles. It melts easily and will harden very well. So
you can make all kinds of shapes and types.
* HINT - To help keep bubbles out of your soap put
some rubbing alcohol in a cheap spray bottle and
spray any bubbles that form on the top. Also spray
the top of the soap when you are finished. This will
stop the surface tension that will make your soap
uneven at the top as it dries.
Melting Glycerin Soap
To melt the soap cut it up into small pieces. There are two
methods for melting the soap. Make sure you melt the
soap all the way so there are not any hard pieces.
DO NOT STIR !!! - You will create bubbles that will not
come out. Just relax and let it melt slowly.
STOVE - To melt it on the stove you can melt it in a double
boiler over a low heat.
MICROWAVE - You can also melt it in the microwave in a
glass bowl or glass measuring cup. Microwave at 15
second intervals until it is all melted and smooth.
Additives
At this point you can add in food coloring or scented oil if
you want. You need to be sure the scented oil is safe for
skin. Oils made for candles should not be used in soaps.
Make sure you stir very carefully so you do not add
bubbles to the soap.
Molds
You can use just about anything as a mold for your
glycerin soap. They make molds you can buy. You can use
candy molds. If you are careful you can also use cookie
cutters. You just have to roll out some playdough and
press the cookie cutter down into the playdough enough
to hold it still and keep the soap from pouring out from
under the shape. Look around and see what other objects
you have around your house that will work. Also
remember that you can use large molds like a bread pan or
a frozen juice can. Glycerin soap can be sliced easily. To
clean up the cut just rub the soap with wet fingers. If you
are worried about the soap not coming out of the mold
easily you can also spray the mold with a vegetable oil
cooking spray.
